Why are the leaves of my jasmine turning yellow or brown?

Is Tuscan jasmine hardy? (star jasmine)

Tuscan jasmine (also known as star jasmine) is being planted more and more often.

It is, in fact, a beautiful plant with wonderfully fragrant white flowers in the summer, and it stays green in the winter.

Although Tuscan jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides) can tolerate drier conditions fairly well on its own, the plant often dries out after planting.

Have you recently planted star jasmine and noticed that the leaves are turning yellow or brown? And do the leaves seem to be drying out?

Then you're most likely not giving it enough water after all!

Although this jasmine can tolerate drought fairly well, it’s still important to water it sufficiently during and after planting. Only once the plant has become well-established will it require less water.

So always make sure that, even with plants that are more drought-tolerant, you always more than enough water provides (and will continue to provide for the time being)!

Winter: Frost Damage

In winter, there can be many other causes. Brown or dry leaves are also often the result of frost damage.

However, this is usually preceded by red leaves on Tuscan jasmine. However, they may also emerge from under the snow with brown stems. Depending on how severely the jasmine has been damaged, the plant may still be able to recover. If there are still green parts visible, there is a chance it will recover.

Tuscan jasmine prefers a sheltered location and well-drained soil. This helps the jasmine tolerate frost better. However, frost damage will often occur at temperatures below -12°C.

Not enough land

There does need to be enough soil available for the jasmine. You often see climbing plants planted in strips 10–20 cm wide. This is really not enough for a plant to grow properly.

It requires a lot of extra care (especially watering) to get it to take root. That’s because such a small strip of soil absorbs very little water and retains even less.

Potted jasmine

Planting it in a pot can also cause Tuscan jasmine to dry out easily, especially in a terracotta pot.

If you make sure the pot has very good drainage, you won't overwater it easily (especially during a drought)! For example, keep watering until you see water running out the bottom of the pot.
