Which geranium stays smaller than the Geranium Rozanne?

With its unrivaled abundance of blooms, long flowering season, and beautiful blue to purplish-blue flowers, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ is one of the most popular geraniums. According to many, it’s even the best geranium! However, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ also has a drawback, at least for small gardens: it’s a very vigorous grower. This robust geranium is capable of taking over your entire border and outgrowing other plants. Although that looks beautiful, it’s probably not what you’re aiming for.

Can you keep Geranium ‘Rozanne’ small and compact?

Once “Rozanne” has really taken root, each plant can grow quite a bit. If you were advised to plant about 5–7 per meter when you first planted them, you’ll soon see just how big they really get. Each ‘Rozanne’ can easily fill a square meter per plant. This geranium can also grow taller, especially if it’s leaning against other plants.

It is possible to keep Geranium ‘Rozanne’ somewhat smaller and more compact. Pruning is recommended for this purpose. If you perform the Chelsea Chop around the end of May, you’ll notice that your Rozannes grow more compactly. They won’t grow as tall and usually won’t spread as quickly either. However, this will cause flowering to start a little later. Later in the summer, another pruning may be necessary to curb its vigorous growth.

Rozanne also grows a bit more slowly in a pot or container, although it's quite possible that the runners will extend far beyond the pot.

Is there a compact variety of Geranium 'Rozanne'? Which Geranium stays smaller?

If you’d still like to prevent this geranium from taking over your border, choose Geranium ‘Azure Rush’. This geranium has the same characteristics as ‘Rozanne’: abundant blooms, an exceptionally long blooming period, and beautiful blue-purple flowers. However, ‘Azure Rush’ grows much more compactly. This geranium remains smaller and lower than ‘Rozanne.’ It also blooms from July through November.

Pink Rozanne

Would you rather have a pink Geranium Rozanne that doesn't grow too large? In that case, consider Geranium ‘Pink Penny’ or Geranium ‘Bloom Time’.
