They also make for a beautiful silhouette in winter. Panicle hydrangeas are more tolerant of sun and drought than the well-known common or ball hydrangeas.

When should you prune panicle hydrangeas?

You can prune panicle hydrangeas in February, March, or April. You could even prune them back before winter, but then you'll miss out on their beautiful winter silhouette.

Here, Hydrangea paniculata is usually pruned in late February or early March. Often, the first leaf buds have already formed by then, but it’s okay to prune them off. The plant will simply sprout new growth again.

You can also prune later, but it may take a little longer for the plant to start blooming.

How should you prune panicle hydrangeas?

You can prune Hydrangea paniculata back heavily every year. This type of hydrangea blooms on new growth. Prune it back to about 30–50 cm above the ground. This will keep your panicle hydrangea compact and prevent it from blooming only at the top.

Would you like your panicle hydrangeas to grow a little taller? If so, prune them to about 70–90 cm above the ground.

If you prefer a low-growing plant with branches starting at ground level, you could even prune it to 5–10 cm above the ground.

Encouraging Larger Flower Heads

It's also possible to encourage the growth of extra-large flower heads. By pruning back heavily and training the plant to form low, main branches with few side shoots, you can produce extra-large flower clusters.

Higher main branches with many offshoots result in more panicles, but these remain smaller.
