When can you start pruning roses? And how?

In a mild winter, roses start to bud early again. So the question of whether it’s time to prune them again soon comes up. Although we fully understand that you want to start gardening early again, it’s important to know what you can do and when. Can you prune roses in winter or early spring? And is it a good idea?

When can you start pruning roses?

The pruning period depends on your location. If there is still a chance of severe frost, it’s better to wait a little longer before pruning. This is because new shoots can sometimes sustain some frost damage. The plant itself will usually suffer little damage. In our region, it’s generally safe to say that you can prune shrub roses, cluster roses, large-flowered roses, and groundcover roses between mid-February and late March.

Regular pruning of your roses is important to ensure healthy growth and blooming, as well as a strong shape.

What about new growth?

By the way, it's okay to prune away some of the new growth. It will quickly sprout again, and starting in early summer, you'll be able to enjoy beautiful, healthy, and strong roses that are in full bloom.

It's often better to prune a little later (and lose some of the new growth) than to prune too early, which could still leave your roses vulnerable to frost damage.

How do you prune roses?

First, take a look at the shape of the rose in front of you. To start, prune away any crossing branches. You should also prune away weak growth (thin, spindly twigs) and dead wood. Next, prune the rose back low to the ground (we usually do this at about 30 cm). This will leave you with a beautiful and strong framework.

Try to prune above a bud that’s facing outward. This is because you want to encourage good, strong outward growth.

Don't prune when it's freezing, and choose a dry day for this pruning job.

This pruning method applies to shrub roses, cluster roses, and large-flowered roses. Climbing roses (also known as espalier roses) are often pruned a little earlier, around December–January.
