What flowers are already blooming in January?

January is the height of winter (although it hasn't seemed quite as cold in recent years…). You might not immediately think there are still many plants that bloom in January.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of options!

Our Favorite Winter-Blooming Plants for January

Fortunately, there are still quite a few plants that are blooming this month. Our favorites have to be the early-blooming flower bulbs such as snowdrops (Galanthus) and winter aconite (Eranthis).

The many different cultivars of Helleborus orientalis (Eastern hellebore) and, of course, Erica (winter heath) are the most beautiful perennials for this month.

In our opinion, the most beautiful shrubs and trees that bloom in January are Hamamelis (witch hazel), early-blooming Camellia varieties (such as sasanqua), Viburnum (both tinus and bodnantense), and of course we mustn’t forget the winter cherry: Prunus subhirtella autumnalis, with its gorgeous blossoms!

Winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) is, in our opinion, the most beautiful climbing plant that blooms as early as January.
