What are the minimum dimensions for a vegetable garden box?

A vegetable garden container is ideal if you want to start growing vegetables but have limited space—or if you don't have access to open ground.

It’s also easier to move a container (during the season or even throughout the day, if it has wheels). Plus, you can move a container out of the way more quickly if you ever need some extra space.

How big should a vegetable garden bed be?

A vegetable garden container with an interior size of 90 cm, 100 cm, or 120 cm is a great size to start with.

Still, it’s a good idea not to necessarily choose a square (meter) planter if, for example, you’re placing it against a wall or fence. Since you can’t walk around it, it’s very difficult to reach the back of the planter. A planter of that size isn’t a problem if you can walk around it.

If you're standing in front of the garden bed and have to reach farther than 60–80 cm, using your vegetable garden becomes a lot more difficult.

A size of 120x60 cm is therefore also a popular size.

Very little space?

Do you have even less space? We can make it even smaller!

Think, for example, of 60x60 cm or even 30x30 cm. You could then grow one type of vegetable per container or pot, for example.

It does take a little more effort to care for small containers. The soil dries out much faster, and depending on the type of vegetable, it may need to be fertilized sooner.

Subject allocation or grid

To grow different vegetables in the garden bed, it’s helpful to create a grid or division system. It’s often recommended to make 30x30 cm sections for this purpose. For convenience, you can mark these off using a frame made of wooden slats.

How deep should a vegetable garden bed be?

Although a depth of 15 cm is sufficient for many species, most standard tanks are about 20 cm deep. This is a perfectly adequate depth.

For many vegetables, deeper planting isn't necessary either. Certainly not for vegetables that are suitable for growing in a small garden.
