Table Decorating Tips for a Cozy Fall Table in Your Garden
In many gardens, the blooming season is slowly coming to an end. Here and there, fall-blooming plants and ornamental grasses are still offering one last burst of color. Want to enjoy vibrant colors and a festive atmosphere for longer? Then transform your garden table into a beautiful fall table with our table decoration tips for the fall.
What exactly is an autumn table?
An autumn table is a beautifully set or decorated table featuring elements that are characteristic of the fall season. Think of decorations, natural materials, and colors that complement the atmosphere and the unique beauty of fall.
Go for authentic fall colors
Want to create a real fall atmosphere? Then go for authentic fall colors, such as warm yellow, ochre, deep orange, chestnut brown, burgundy, and dark purple. Fall hues are rich and warm and reflect the warm, cozy, and inviting feeling of fall.
Use natural materials as table decorations
Natural materials are perfect for a beautiful fall table arrangement. Think of fall leaves, seeds, nuts, fruit, pumpkins, pretty branches, candles and string lights, old garden items, and, of course, flowers and plants as table decorations. With all these materials, you can create a charming arrangement for your garden table.
Seeds, nuts, and leaves
A typical fall table display includes leaves, chestnuts, beech nuts, and twigs. Walnuts and (partially) dried sunflowers also work well. For example, create a beautiful fall arrangement of seeds and nuts on a large tray. Use fall leaves and graceful branches to finish it off. The beautifully colored fall leaves instantly add a fall atmosphere to your table decoration.
Fruit and Berries
Fall is a time when a lot of fruit can be harvested. In many cases, you’ll quickly end up with extra fruit (such as damaged fruit). Why not put together a fruit basket for your outdoor table? It’s perfect for the season, and the birds, in particular, will be grateful. Rotting fruit also attracts the last butterflies of the season. Be sure to bring the fruit inside at night to keep pests away. Good options include apples, pears, quinces, grapes, figs, raspberries, and blackberries.
Pumpkins and gourds
Pumpkins and gourds are the quintessential symbols of fall. Place a few small pumpkins on the table, or choose one really big pumpkin and make it the centerpiece. You can also hollow them out and use them as unique candle holders. For Halloween, you can, of course, carve spooky shapes into them.
Flowers and Plants on the Table
Fall-blooming plants in pots and planters add lots of beautiful, cheerful colors. They also instantly liven up your fall table. Flowering plants you can use include asters, chrysanthemums, heather, violas, cyclamen, anemones, lily of the valley, sedum, and dahlias. But small shrubs with berries, such as skimmia, mountain tea, and pearlberry, are also perfect. Combine them with evergreen plants like (variegated) ivy, Carex, and dwarf conifers for a stunning display. See also our previous blog post featuring perfect Fall Plant Combinations in Pots. You could also consider spent flowers for their shape and texture, or real dried flowers.
Candles, lanterns, and decorative lighting
Lighting really sets the mood. Complete your table decoration with candles, lanterns, and decorative lights (such as solar-powered ones). It often looks nice during the day, but in the evening, that cozy vibe really shines through! Placing atmospheric lighting around your garden table is also a great way to add plenty of extra ambiance to your patio.
(Old) garden items as decorations
Of course, you could also consider a nice watering can, old gardening tools, rope, lanterns, decorative pots or vases, containers, (fruit) baskets, tin cans, etc. Old tableware or cutlery from around the house can also be a lovely addition as decoration for your garden table in the fall.
