Marianne's Endless White City Garden (75 m²)

Do you remember Marianne’s garden in Rotterdam? Her endless green city garden transformed into a magical white world this month. We saw her photos in our small garden group and asked if we could share them on the website. Luckily, she was okay with that. So we’re sharing these beautiful winter photos by Marianne Bakelaar with you.

Just for your information: this is a 5-by-15-meter (75 m²) garden attached to an old ground-floor apartment in Rotterdam-West. Because the garden opens up toward the neighbors, it seems much more spacious.

The photos below clearly show how much snow had fallen.

Late Summer vs. Winter

Here is the difference between the colorful late summer and a true winter landscape.

Winter Pictures

The witch hazel (Hamamelis pallida) is now beginning to bloom, the goldfinch comes by every day to pick up sunflower seeds, and the trees and shrubs are covered in a thick layer of snow.

Heron Time

This (cheeky) blue heron is a regular visitor to the garden in the winter. He has his sights set on the frogs in the pond and stops by several times a day to see if there’s anything to catch. It’s wonderful to watch, of course, but we don’t want the heron to catch all the frogs in the pond.
