Most people want to put up a tree in their home as soon as possible after St. Nicholas Eve.

But how do you keep the Christmas tree green long enough to enjoy it even after the holidays? How do you prevent the needles from falling off prematurely?

Choose the Right Christmas Tree

Which Christmas tree should you choose? The Nordmann fir holds onto its needles the best. It’s no wonder this particular variety is so popular.

Blue spruce (Picea pungens ‘Glauca’) and Serbian spruce (Picea omorika) also shed fewer needles. Unlike the Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana), however, their needles are prickly.

One of the best-selling Christmas trees is the Norway spruce (Picea abies). Although it has a pleasant pine scent, its needles fall off fairly quickly. However, this species is often sold at an affordable price.

When choosing your Christmas tree, make sure there are no visible signs of damage or bare spots. Also, not too many needles should fall off when you lift the tree. If the tree feels very light, that’s usually not a good sign. It may not have absorbed enough water.

Of course, the best tip is not to buy your Christmas tree too early…

Keeping a Cut Christmas Tree Green

Even a cut Christmas tree needs care to keep it looking its best for as long as possible.

• Once you get the Christmas tree home, cut off a little extra from the trunk (a few centimeters). This will help it absorb water better and prevent it from drying out as quickly. When you cut it, leave the netting on for a little while so the branches don’t get damaged right away.

• Place the Christmas tree in a bucket or a Christmas tree stand filled with plenty of water as soon as possible. If possible, let the new Christmas tree acclimate for another 24 hours in a cooler part of the house (such as the garage).

• Don't place the Christmas tree too close to a heater, because that will cause it to dry out more quickly. A spot in direct sunlight is also less ideal.

• Water regularly and make sure the tree is always standing in a shallow layer of water.

How to Care for a Christmas Tree with a Root Ball or in a Pot

• A potted Christmas tree needs proper care, just like any other living plant. The challenge here is that it’s brought indoors after having spent all those years outside in the cold.

• When choosing a Christmas tree with a root ball, look for the same things you would with a cut tree (damage, bare spots, needles falling off when you lift it), but also examine the root ball. Is it in good condition? Does it look moist, and does it stay intact when you lift it?

• Let the Christmas tree acclimate for about 24 hours in a cooler room in the house (such as the garage).

• Make sure the root ball stays intact by using a pot that fits well.

• Don't place the Christmas tree too close to a heater, because that will cause it to dry out more quickly. A spot in direct sunlight is also less ideal.

• Keep the root ball sufficiently moist. Don't let the root ball dry out, but it shouldn't be too wet either.

• The longer the Christmas tree stays in the house, the less likely it is that it can be replanted after the holidays. If you plan to do this, don’t bring the Christmas tree into the house too early. There’s always a risk of the tree dying during the transition from indoors to outdoors.

• If the root ball falls apart before replanting, or if a large portion of the needles have already fallen off, there’s really no chance of it taking root.
