Instead of staring at a dark void from your home in the evening, you’ll still be able to see your beloved garden. With a good lighting plan, you can even create extra ambiance in the garden and, as it were, extend your living room or kitchen with a beautiful view.
Functional Outdoor Lighting (and Safety)
Garden lighting is, first and foremost, very practical. It allows you to enter and use your garden even after dark. This is especially handy in the winter, when it gets dark early. Good outdoor lights By your back door or front door, by the shed, or at a planting table (if you're lucky enough to have one) are great spots.
Of course, garden lighting also helps you see where the path goes or where any obstacles might be. For example, choose low-intensity ground lights along the path, or place a small outdoor lamp near protruding features (such as a raised flower bed). Lighting along the path is especially handy when you have guests, because you can probably find your way around your own small garden even with your eyes closed!
Outdoor lighting also helps deter break-ins. Burglars simply prefer not to strike in broad daylight… For example, choose bright lights with motion sensors. Ideally, install them in a spot where you’re not likely to trigger them yourself when walking through the yard. It also helps to limit the sensor’s range so that the light doesn’t turn on every time you open the back door.

Once you’ve decided on the functional lighting, that’s when the fun really begins… Now you can completely transform the atmosphere and look of your garden in the evening!
With a good lighting plan, you can create a much more inviting atmosphere in your garden. By striking the right balance between light and dark, you can highlight—or, conversely, conceal—different areas of your garden. That way, once the sun goes down, your garden will consist only of the elements you love to see. You can illuminate precisely those elements in your garden—for example, with ground spots in the flower bed, elegant freestanding garden lamps, wall sconces, or pendant lights and spotlights.
Tips for Creating a Cozier Atmosphere with Garden Lighting
- Ground lights in a color that isn't too bright (e.g., warm white) create a lovely atmosphere in your garden and are ideal for highlighting your flower beds. That way, you can still enjoy all your beautiful plants in the evening.
- You can dress up a bare wall or fence with decorative pendant lights or wall sconces. This instantly adds more ambiance to your garden. Of course, you should choose the style of these lights to match your garden’s style and the materials used in your garden.
- You can highlight an architectural plant or tree, a stately garden feature, or a sturdy structure with a spotlight. The spotlight shines from below to create a beautiful and dramatic effect. Be sure to choose the right spotlight (and the right intensity) so that the light doesn't shine too high.
- You can emphasize the clean lines of a minimalist garden with modern lighting.
- You can create more depth in your garden by placing lights along the main lines of sight—for example, along a path. While this may not be necessary for safety, a clean line of lights looks truly beautiful in the evening!
- Also place a light near the window so you can see your garden clearly from inside your home in the evening, when the lights are on.
- You can create even more ambiance by hanging lights in a tree, a tall shrub, or on a pergola. Party lights or Christmas lights, for example, are perfect for this.
- Do you have a (mini) pond or a slightly deeper water feature in your garden? If so, an underwater spotlight would be a beautiful addition. It creates a truly special effect!
