Does Sedum stay green in the winter?

Sedum comes in many species and varieties, but they are all succulents, and bees love them! Sedum has a long blooming period and can continue to bloom profusely well into the fall. There are both taller and shorter varieties of sedum (Hylotelephium).

Is Sedum evergreen?

The answer to this question is both yes and no… This is because there are different types of sedum. The low-growing sedum varieties are called Sedum (such as Sedum acre, album, and reflexum), and the tall-growing sedum varieties are called Hylotelephium (such as spectabile, Carl, and Matrona). Previously, the scientific name for these was also Sedum, but this has since been changed. Although the new name is certainly no easier, this distinction is helpful in answering this question.

Is stonecrop evergreen? (tall sedum varieties)

Hylotelephium, also known as stonecrop (a type of sedum with taller stems), blooms with countless star-shaped flowers in umbels. Flowering often begins with white or cream-colored buds, which then open into pink or red flowers. It blooms well into the fall and attracts many bees. Depending on the variety, the stems are green, (dark) purple, or red.

The leaves of the stonecrop remain on the plant for a long time in winter, but will eventually fall off. Before falling off, the leaves lose their color noticeably. This sedum is not evergreen. Nevertheless, even non-evergreen sedum has ornamental value: the stems with spent flowers remain visible throughout the winter. In early spring, prune the remaining old flower heads and stems back to just above the soil.

Is sedum evergreen? (groundcover sedum varieties)

Sedum, also known as stonecrop, refers to low-growing or ground-covering varieties. These include, for example, Sedum acre (wall stonecrop), Sedum album (white stonecrop), Sedum reflexum, Sedum oreganum, Sedum spathulifolium, and Sedum spurium. These species are increasingly being used for green roofs, sedum roofs, or sedum mats.

Many of these sedum varieties have a shorter and less profuse flowering period, but this sedum is evergreen. They are also very easy-to-care-for evergreen plants that require little maintenance. Pruning is usually not necessary.
