In addition to beautiful plants in your flower beds, would you like to brighten up your garden with some fun decorations? Even in a small garden, there’s always room for some fun decorations. Even larger items often don’t look out of place in a small garden.

Decorating is a very personal choice. While some people opt for antique pieces or authentic materials, others prefer industrial elements or, conversely, natural and rustic materials like wood and stone.

Ideally, choose garden decor that matches your garden style or complements the materials used in your garden. Of course, you can also deliberately opt for a nice contrast!

Garden decorations are also fun to collect or to give as gifts. For example, as an original birthday gift, for a housewarming, or even as practical corporate gifts. Of course, it’s important to know the recipient’s taste…

Wall Decor

Do you have a garden with bare fences or boring walls? Then wall decor is a great solution. Wall decor comes in many styles, materials, and sizes. Yet this type of garden decor usually takes up relatively little space. Ideal for a (very) small garden! Think of garden posters or outdoor paintings, mirrors, decorative shutters, shelves and small cabinets, elegant wall sconces, and wall decor made from unique materials. You can even create a mural!

Garden Statues

In large gardens, you see beautiful ones much more often Garden Statues. Still, a garden statue is definitely worth considering even in a small garden. You can really make a statement with a beautiful and appropriate statue without spending a fortune on a large one. Buddha statues are still very popular, as are statues of animals and people.

A garden statue placed at the back of a flower bed can be a lovely addition among your favorite plants. Or place a statue at the edge of the patio, or at the end of a line of sight (such as a path). A Buddha next to a water feature is still a classic choice.

Water Features

Water in the garden creates a sense of peace and tranquility (or, conversely, excitement and a sense of adventure). For many small gardens, a pond is often too large, but there are other ways to incorporate water into your garden. There’s always room for a water bowl. Animals love to come and drink from it, and you’ll soon see birds happily bathing in it. If you have a little more space, you could also consider a mini-pond. Are you looking for the soothing sound of gently babbling or flowing water? Then a water feature is ideal—for example, a small fountain or a feature with a mini waterfall.

Just make sure the water doesn't fall too deep or flow too fast, or else it will quickly become more than just a soothing sound…

Pots, containers, baskets, tubs, vats…

Even old sinks are used as decorations and planters in the garden. The advantage of pots, containers, and the like is that they’re not only decorative on their own, but you can also (and really, you should always…) fill them with your favorite garden plants! The possibilities are endless. Think of terracotta pots, stainless steel containers, zinc tubs, buckets or watering cans, wicker baskets, plastic tubs, stone pots, or woven hanging baskets…

Be sure to consider the location in your garden and choose the right soil for the plants you want to put in the pot or planter.

Animal-friendly garden decorations

Birdhouses, bee hotels, insect hotels, butterfly houses, hedgehog houses… Not only do they look great in the garden, but they also help a lot of animals, birds, and insects! Who wouldn’t want more animals in their garden?

Tips for Decorating a Small Garden

• It's better to choose one or a few large(r) objects, elements, pots, or planters rather than many small ones. This creates a more serene atmosphere in the garden.

• Arrange various garden decor items together and create designated spots for decorations or art objects. This helps create a less cluttered look.

• Limit the number of different materials you use in the garden. A little contrast is fine, but aim for a cohesive look.

• Go ahead and choose a real eye-catcher: a garden decoration or a striking work of art. A large garden sculpture at the end of a line of sight can definitely add value to your small garden.
