Spider Plant (Chlorophytum)

Are you just getting started with houseplants? The spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) is a great plant to start with. It doesn’t grow very tall, but it easily produces offshoots (which you can use to grow new plants). Spider plants require very little care. They are very hardy plants that thrive in a variety of conditions. Even with limited sunlight, this isn’t a problem for the spider plant. Its fresh green, pointed leaves feature variegated edges.

Pancake Plant (Pilea)

Another houseplant that usually doesn’t grow very large is the pancake plant (Pilea peperomioides). This charming plant has small, round leaves and quickly produces new shoots on a sturdy stem. In the shade, the leaves may grow slightly larger. Pilea also requires little care and is suitable for a variety of environments. However, it prefers not to be placed in direct (full) sunlight.

ZZ plant (Zamioculcas)

The ZZ plant is perhaps the easiest houseplant there is! This plant thrives in virtually any conditions and is therefore not picky at all. It is a beautifully shaped houseplant with dark green, glossy leaves. Over time, the plant can grow quite a bit taller.

Mother-in-Law's Tongue (Sansevieria)

Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, also known as Sansevieria, is another very well-known and easy-to-care-for houseplant. For a while, this plant was dismissed as old-fashioned, but that’s actually completely unfair. It’s a stately plant with beautiful upright growth, thick and sturdy leaves, and often attractive variegated leaf edges. Sansevieria isn’t at all picky about where it’s placed in the home and is incredibly hardy. Older specimens, by the way, can grow quite tall—a beautiful sight!

Golden Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Want to add something special to your home? Then go for the golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum). This climbing plant will turn your home into a real urban jungle in no time! Be sure to provide the golden pothos with some support so you can guide it nicely (it looks gorgeous trailing along the top of a door or window frame). It can thrive in both a bright spot in your home and a darker spot. If the plant gets too big, you can simply prune it back. Incidentally, golden pothos has a second Latin name: Scindapsus.

Palm Lily (Yucca)

Don’t forget the Yucca! Yucca elephantipes is a beautiful, robust, and reliable houseplant. Over time, it develops a magnificent trunk that supports its characteristic pointed leaves. Native to Central and South America, it can tolerate a great deal of heat and sun. Yucca tolerates extended periods of drought well. A Yucca is incredibly hardy and nearly impossible to kill. Neglected plants often recover completely. So not only is Yucca very easy to care for, but it also adds an architectural touch to your room.

Succulents

Succulents (along with cacti) are becoming increasingly popular. They are very easy-to-care-for plants with unique (almost artistic) shapes. They require very little water and thrive in sunny spots. Succulents require very little care. There are countless varieties, including aloe vera, Crassula, Echeveria, Kalanchoe, Sedum, and Senecio.
