15 Tips for a Beautiful Winter Garden

Your garden doesn't have to be boring, bare, or colorless in the winter! Winter is actually the perfect time to create a garden that invites you to go outside and enjoy it. Would you like a beautiful winter garden, too?

• Wait until after winter to prune perennials and ornamental grasses, so you can enjoy your winter garden for as long as possible. Animals, birds, and insects will also be grateful to you for the extra food and the many hiding places this creates.

• Prune evergreen plants and hedges around September to get them into good shape for winter. This way, these plants will go into winter in good condition, and young shoots will have enough time to harden off before the frost sets in.

• Leave faded hydrangea blooms on the plant. Not only does this provide a little extra protection for the new buds, but it also looks absolutely stunning when they’re covered with a light dusting of frost, ice, or snow!

• You should also wait until after winter to prune dogwood (Cornus), so you can keep color in your garden for as long as possible. Pruning it back heavily each year helps the branches retain their color.
